Sumathi Iyengar. Amalan's mother, Pediatrician.

I live in Chapel Hill, North Carolina with my husband and our two daughters and two sons. I am originally from India and emigrated in 1987 after completing my medical studies there. After completing my residency and chief residency at Children's Hospital of Orange County, I continued to practice there until 2002. Amalan was born in the fall of 1998 in California and diagnosed in 1999 as having XLT and since that time our family has been learning more about WAS and how best to manage the medical and social dimensions of WAS.

We moved to North Carolina in the summer of 2002 and I stopped practicing medicine in order to pay more attention to the family and to home school Amalan. It was not an easy choice, but it has been well worth it. Amalan was primarily home schooled until 2nd grade, receiving a couple of hours a week of home bound instruction from a regular teacher. For health and safety reasons, we wanted Amalan to be home schooled, but he wanted to attend school like his sisters. We therefore progressively increased his school hours and he began attending school full time in the 5th grade. With Amalan settling in middle school, the little one growing up, and having kept up with continuing education, it is my hope to be able to resume practicing at some point.
